Hello All,
I am preparing for my first OC with the i5 3570k processor on an ASRock z77 extreme6 MB. I am following the ASRock guide from Tom's and I have a question regarding my RAM adjustments. I am running 8GB (2x4GB) of RAM G. Skill F3-12800CL9-4GBXL. G. Skill states the configuration should be 9,9,9,24 with 1.5v. My BIOS is showing a configuration of 11,11,11,28 with a CR of 1N. The ASRock OC guide states I should change these settings to 9,9,9,24; however, I am not able to adjust the CR. The CR stays at 1N AUTO. If I type in 2N; it converts back to AUTO and remains at 1N.

So, I changed the settings to 9,9,9,24 and left the CR at AUTO, saved, and restarted my system. CPU-Z shows my configuration at 9,9,9,24 but my CR changed to 2T.

I am wondering if this is normal and I can continue onward with the OC? And is it safe to adjust these settings if the BIOS had them set differently upon my initial build? Thank you.

You should be able to set XMP in the EFI (BIOS). I have never used G. Skill memory before, but it is very popular. No need for an overclock on memory anyway. 1600 999-24-2T is actually probably the best setting. Don't worry about going to far in your settings as your board will let you know when its unhappy. If you haven't already, download the latest BIOS. Concentrate on the CPU OC. You should have no problem at least hitting 4ghz just changing the multiplier to 40.

Thank you both! I went ahead with the OC. I did not download the latest BIOS because so many people kept saying, "if it isn't broke don't try and fix it." My current BIOS is v2.4 and I believe ASRock z77 extreme6 has an update of 2.8 out, but I didn't mess with it. If you see any major reason that I should, I am interested in hearing it.

I followed the excellent ASRock OC guide (http://www.overclock.net/t/1198504/complete-overclocking-guide-sandy-bridge-ivy-bridge-asrock-edition) and I'm running 4.5 now. I could probably push it more but I didn't play with the voltage at all, I went with the 'Green Overclock'. I hit 4.8 but started having some problems, so I knocked it down to 4.5 and she is running beautifully.

Thanks again.

Most people are often wrong about most things. Update to the latest firmware, it's just good practice.
