Just bought a GTX 770 2GB. Is SLI an option?

Hey,

So after a lot of debate I settled on a Gigabyte Windforce OC GTX 770 2GB for my build. Going to be playing on one monitor at 1080p for the foreseeable future. If I find it's not quite enough for the most intensive games, or for the next wave of AAA titles, would adding another and running in SLI be viable? Everyone seems to suggest that 4GB is "highly recommended" for SLI'ing, but is that really necessary for a single 1080p monitor? Would I just be better off waiting and upgrading to the 800-series or something down the road? That would be a shame. I had hoped that adding another 770 down the road when prices drop would be a more affordable way of boosting frames.

Thanks!

it will be more than enough for most games to max out for a long time yet. the 770 will give an average over 60fps, just the minimum fps will drop below 60 occasionally on some maps. by the time you come to add a second card you will likely want to sell the 770 and go for the newer hardware of the time.

Okay that's reassuring. I will also most likely be jumping up to 1440p at some point here, so that was also a consideration as to why SLI might be more beneficial. I don't see myself going to double or triple displays though.

depends if you want high fps or image quality. if you like playing your games with vsync on then another card would be a waste of money as the fps would be limited to 60 fps, but if you dont mind microstutter and tearing a second 770 will give you between 75 and 95% increase in fps if the rest of your system is up to it. ie your not trying to run em with a dual core.
2gigs per card is plenty to run 1440p the gpu on the other hand will take quite a hit on the fps. some where in the region of 30% if you use aa and some other higher end filters.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. My plan is to see how things go with the one 2GB card at 1080p. I'm definitely going to be planning on playing BF4, and I would like to have AA on, so if I'm not able to reach playable frame rates online, I'll have to look into picking up a second one.

CPU and PSU won't be a problem if I do go SLI. 4670K and plenty of watts.

I don't think 4GB should be necessary though to get the frames up. It would be nice, but I got a really good deal on the 2GB, so 4GB just wouldn't have warranted the fairly considerable extra cost at the time (~$90). So I'll be looking at 2x 2GB most likely, if I have to go that route.

This is kinda making me wish I'd just gone with the GTX 780 like I was planning originally. My logic was that at 1 monitor at 1080p, the 780 was overkill, and that a 770 would likely be more than enough for the time being. Once prices drop, I figured I could pick up a second one pretty cheaply. Hopefully 1 770 will be okay long enough to make that strategy viable. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Hexit, that's probably very true!

Okay well I feel much better about my decision now.

Thanks everyone for all the discussions and advice!
