I have recently noticed that my SSD (Seagate 600 Series 120 GB) has been displaying an odd amount of free space available on the disk.
Adjusting for the difference in how storage is measured between computer systems and storage manufacturing, there are 111.1 GB of total space available for storage on the disk.
After noticing the projections for free space seeming to be a little low, I began to investigate the size of each of the folders within the drive. Double clicking on the drive in My Computer brings the screen with all primary folders within the drive (Users, Windows, Program Files, Program Files (x86), etc.). Using the properties tool to determine the effective size of each folder, I have found the sum to go as follows:
32.5 + 4.25 + 5.93 + 3.35 + 19.0 = 65.03 GB of stored material.
However, the computer lists the free space as 27.6 GB free of 111 GB.
65 + 27.6 = 92.6 GB, which obviously does not equal 111 GB.
Any insight as to what might be happening? Is there an error in my methodology of checking the individual sizes of each folder within the C: drive? Are there hidden folders that aren't clearly visible somewhere, and if so, how can I find them?
If this were a 1 TB HDD I wouldn't sweat it too much, but given this is only a 120 GB SSD, for 20 GB to be filled and unaccounted for is certainly worrying. Thank you for your insight.
