Specs are -
asus m5a99fx pro r2.0 mobo
XFX Pro 550w psu
AMD FX 8320 8-core black edition
Cooler Master Hyper 212 evo cpu cooler
2x4GB sticks of viper patriot ram
CM Storm Scout advanced case
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB HDD
ASUS Blu Ray optical drive dvd rw (apologies cant find exact model)

I have troubleshooted all the newbie mistakes I can find. Went through various lists of newbie mistakes. I checked all my wires, ram video card and they are all in place the way they should be. Ram in the correct slots( I have replaced parts on my computers in the past...just never built one from scratch). When the power supply is on I get the green led on the motherboard. When I try to turn the rig on though the leds on the fans light up and they all begin to spin for about a second or so and then it shuts down. I am at a loss. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Eric,

When you get a green light it means power is getting to the board.
However all it does is check the 12v supply from the Psu to the Atx block of the board.

If the system powers up with all the fans spinning for a second or two, then powers off.
It means you have not connected the extra 8pin 12v block from the psu to the motherboard.

The block on the board is located near or around the cpu socket
Yours is on the out most edge of the board in blue, above the cpu socket.

This must be connected or you will get the problem you are having.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Shaun I do have that plugged in ( although I will admit it was one of the last things I did because I almost missed it). I unplugged and then plugged back in every single cable on the rig and still got the same result. I did not buy the power supply myself and I now know it was bought off of ebay. I did not realize this until this morning but the fans on my video card do not start turning when i try to boot. One of them barely moved for a blink of an eye. Only one of the 3 that are on the video card. I have just ordered a brand new power supply from best buy and I am going to install it. Its the only thing I can think of.

Also I have noticed after a couple more attempts that the shutdown is almost immediate. The LEDs stay on for a second or 2 but it powers down almost instantly.
