hello, i currently have 4GBs of RAM, they idle at about 60-65% and when i push some loads on the system like multiple browser pages + gaming the system lags horribly and RAM shows about 90% utilization and the HDD starts screeching,

Question: is the RAM's bottleneck causing the HDD to start working hard under load? would it be better to Upgrade the RAM to a 8GB or switch the HDD to an SSD?

thx

Solution
Most remotely modern OSes use spare RAM for disk cache. When applications use nearly all the RAM, they start using the swapfile more and the disk cache is also almost gone so you do end up with far more frequent disk accesses and substantial performance degradation. For best performance, you want to have 4-8GB to spare for the disk cache.
