GPU burns (sparks and smoke) at first startup of new build

Hi everyone,

My BF and me just completed a new build (average gaming PC) today. There is no OS on it yet. The PC started fine without GPU. Then we added the GPU, and the PC wouldn't start anymore. Removed the GPU, PC started fine. Added GPU again, and this time a few seconds after pressing the start button, there were sparks, smoke, and an ugly smell coming from the GPU. We shut down the computer immediately. Removed the GPU again, PC still starts fine without GPU. No damage can be seen on the GPU, so I'm not posting any pictures.

I have no idea what happened. Obviously, we'll send the GPU back and hope to get a replacement (we didn't dare putting it in and try again, the sparks/smoke somehow suggested that something has been damaged and trying again would be futile, anyway). We have done builds without problems before. We have simply pushed the GPU into its slot and added the power connector, as usual.

On a side note, the GPU did work for a short while. My BF originally bought it about 2 months ago for a fancy setup with a Laptop (using an external GPU case, a PE4H V3.2). He played Skyrim for about 5 hours on that. Unfortunately, it crashed from time to time and the laptop just takes too long to reboot, so he decided to to a new desktop build instead, and reuse the GPU. Which led us to today's fiasko.

PC Build:
GPU: Gainward Geforce GTX650Ti 1GB
CPU: INTEL Core i5-4440
Mobo: Asrock H81M-ITX
PSU: be quiet! Pure Power L8 (600W)
case: Fractal Design Node 304 (miniITX)
RAM: 2x KINGSTON HyperX KHX1600C9D3B1/4G
SSD: Samsung SSD 840 Evo Series 120GB
HDD: WESTERN DIGITAL Green WD10EZRX, 1.0TB

Does anybody have any idea what could have caused this? I've searched the internet some, and I found no mention of a GPU burning at first startup (they usually start to burn under full load, e.g. when gaming).

Thanks for help,
Tamara
