I work for a software company, it's a little larger than a startup with booming business. Just moved to a bigger office. With that being said, when I first started; they hired three of us. We were in a small house converted to an office. They had limited desks and limited amount of hardware.

We all got laptops with the exception of one guy, who got a older Dell desktop. I got a small desk, 19" dell monitor, and an older dell laptop to work off of. Core 2 duo, 3gb of ram and a 128gig ssd and a native 15.4 inch screen.

I have since moved on to a nicer setup, 17.3" laptop, core i5 2450, 500 gig hdd, 8b of ram, and generally whatever monitor I can get my hands on. Which has been a nicer 22" dell. I don't have the need for more than one. They have also given some of the programmers and supervisors Surface pros and they are about to upgrade to Surface pro 2's. I'm just curious what kind of hardware you started with or what they gave you to work work?

We still use vintage 2004 Dell/HP machines with XP. Most companies I do calls on are about the same.

I use a dell optiplex with an Intel Core 2 Duo running Xp
23 Inch monitor (Sometimes 2 but it usually gets stolen when we hire someone)
Probably one of the crappiest PCs I've ever used.

Most of our clients still use older pentium 4 dells and the such. And we deal with a lot of older servers, lots of dell 1950s and 2950s

Depends on the size and budget of the company. I seen larger ones like Wells Fargos swap out on the schedule 4 year rotation to ensure the computers are within 'lifecycle' and won't be that out of date (that isn't including OS), to mom and pops whom bought a computer 'once' like they buy a 'car' (because it is just as expensive' and NEVER expect to replace it (it turns on so what more do I need?).

As for OS, all depends on the company again, I seen some hold back (Citicorp) to XP and patches (what? Why aren't we on SP3?! IE 6 are you serious?!?!) because they do a holistic view of all systems, including the 'MainFrames' that any such 'OS change to the desktop' would potentially affect ALL systems and cost MILLIONS to support and cost MILLIONS to work around.

It comes down how they view IT, how integrated it is into the business model (is it a Director of IT or is it a CIO?) and how good the top / down is in both business and IT to 'get the job done'.

Sadly those stuck on "older pentium 4" and refuse to get out of "XP" will the companies going forward to have alot of issues with lost records, PCs being 'down', bad data, improper billing, poorer work performance by the employees as compared to the competitor whom 'reinvested' in the IT infrastructure.

From all I learned, if the company does not see IT as a infrastruture as critical as the building plumbing (try telling all the employees no bathrooms work and see what happens), having electricity in the building, or having gasoline in the 'delivery trucks' they will always pay for it in ways they won't "see" because they are running around with blinders on.
