CPU: AMD Phenom ii x4 965 BE
GPU: R9 290

I am planning on upgrading my CPU soon and need the best AMD gaming CPU. I run all of my games on a high setting and i believe my CPU is bottlenecking my computer. What processor should i upgrade to and will i notice a difference?

Before I can recommend you a processor, what is your entire build as there may not be a bottleneck. That and also for gaming the CPU is second to the GPU in terms of importance.

What motherboard are you planning to install the new chip into? This will determine what upgrades are even available to you.

Also, before installing a newer generation chip, ensure your motherboard's BIOS will handle the new chip, or else flash a compatible BIOS before performing the upgrade. :-)

Really the only 2 choices are the FX 8320 and 8350. When you overclock them they are decent gaming CPUs. Anything less will hold back your 290. You could also go with Intel. AMD GPUs show a slight preference for Intel CPUs. The 83xx overclocked to 4.5Ghz will roughly equal an i5 4670k at stock in gaming situations.

That being the case, I would go with anort3's recommendation of either the FX 8320 or FX 8350.

You are underpowered for a 290. You need a recommended 650 watts and not a budget unit like the Corsair CX.

The CX series uses cheap Chinese capacitors that die when stressed....like trying to run a very powerful video card on them. Sometimes when a PSU dies it takes parts with it. I would replace it ASAP.

650 watts from Corsair ( except RM and CX series ), Seasonic, XFX, PC Power and Cooling, Enermax, Silverstone, OCZ, Antec or the high efficiency Rosewill units. Any of those will be fine.

That's a Corsair RM. The RM holds the distinction of being the first Corsair to fail completely in testing. Avoid it.

Yeah, literally one of the best on the market. I'm not sure about price though. Isn't there a UK version of pcpartpicker?

Ah there is!

It's quite a bit cheaper at scan.

Just ordered 8350 and Seasonic SS 650RM PSU. Should be here before christmas. Alse added a coolermaster hyper 212 CPU Cooler as i was using a terrible stock cooler. Thanks for the power supply help btw.
