Hi, I'm looking into building a PC purely for gaming and hopefully one that will last me for a few years. I probably won't be playing on a 4k TV anytime soon and wanted to start with the most important piece- the GPU- which one is better, I keep getting mixed messages.

Any suggestions on any of the other components needed?
My budget is around £1k- Thanks

If you gotta buy right now you need the 780, the coolers on the 290 are terrible. If you can wait, there should be some non reference coolers coming out for the 290 soon and then compare benchmarks once the 290 can actually stay cool.

I'd go with a 4670k processor and a z87 chipset mobo, 8gb ram minimum, corsair or antec psu, 650 or 700W and a coolermaster 212 evo cpu cooler.

No. It's best to start with a solid CPU/Mobo combo that won't bottleneck any card, and will last you a long time before having to be replaced.

And the remaining $$ will help to narrow down on the ideal card to get.

You could opt for a CPU anything above the AMD FX-8320 Vishera to save some Euros to get a better GPU. Both of the cards you listed perform highly. However, depending on the game, some games are optimized for certain hardware.

Which games are you looking forward towards playing the most?
