So confused with fans

OK, so I am a total noob (first rig), but I am going to get a Z87 OC formula motherboard, and I am so confused when it comes to fan support. What the heck is the difference with PWM, APS, etc for fan control? And does is it depend on the motherboard? If I buy 1 PWM fan, and 1 APS fan, will that even work, or do I have to get all PWM fans for fan control or vice versa?

Solution

I suppose you could if you wanted. The 2 fans that come with the H100i have 3-pin connectors, but they also include an adapter so that you can use PWM fans...

PWM is pulse width modulation, and has a 4 pin plug. The rest are 3 pin "dumb" fans that are controlled simply by the voltage sent to them. You can mix and match them to your hearts content. Your fan controller (motherboard, external, etc) will be able to work with almost anything you plug in. If the fan controller has a 4 pin plug for the fan, you can still plug in a 3 pin fan.

It looks like that motherboard has 2 4-pin headers so your limited to 2 PWM fans (one of them being the header for your CPU fan).
Like volksman stated, PWM allows the fan speed to be controlled much more easily than a 3-pin fan.
An APS fan can also be a PWM fan. APS simply lets you choose between 3 different peak speeds for that fan. It essentially gives you 3 fans in 1. Its a really cool technology that I haven't explored very much yet.

I am using a Corsair H100i watercool for my cpu cooler, so doesnt that mean I can use the "header cpu fan" as a regular PWM fan?
