I skipped the grub installation on the master boot record because it wouldn't let me save it to any drive and now I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. I've rebooted numerous times and I tried pressing shift on boot. Nothing works. Can anyone help me please?

Try adding boot-repair to your live dvd or USB, should fix you right up.
Use the default repairs first. Advanced only if default doesn't do the trick.
