it needs to be a USB 3.0 device to get full 3.0 speeds (around 100 MB/s)
however USB 2.0 devices do often perform faster on USB 3.0 sockets because they were bottlenecked by the original interface (capped at 10 MB/s). your typical USB 2.0 device will perform 2-3 times faster on a 3.0 socket
