centurylink told me I don't need my router since their modem contains a router but with just their modem, I get just wifi. I connected their modem's ethernet ports to a router I have and it works fine now..How could this be?

Solution
The problem is likely to be in the configuration of the Centurylink. Connect only a computer to it with an Ethernet cable and of course have the DSL line connected and power plugged in. Then open a browser and type the gateway address of the Centurylink, user, and password, which I assume are still the default and will be listed in the manual.

Then check that DHCP is enabled, and see if the attached computer shows up as a connected device. Also in the wireless pages, insure that the radio is broadcasting.

And do not use the powerline adapter until you figure out the issue with the gateway, it simply complicates things.

It's Actiontec C1000A. I'd like to be able to use both ethernet and wifi using that unit so I don't need to use the Netgear wrn3500v2 router.

They are correct, the unit is a combined ADSL2 modem and N wireless router. Simply attach your DSL line to it and the LAN connections for wired computers. Log in to the configuration pages and set up your wireless -- your manual discusses how to do that.

What you wrote is supposed to how it's supposed to work. I disconnected two ethernet cables from the router (one going to the computer and the other going to a powerline adapter) and connect them to the modem and they do not work. They will only work when I connect them to the router, which I have connected to the modem. Centurylink can't figure it out either...at first they thought it was a modem with a bad ethernet interface so they sent me a new modem..same problem, then they decided it was my computer that was the issue...but I pointed out to them that my powerline device isn't even connected to my computer and that didn't work either.
