I know my mobo is utterly terrible but unfortunately I have to live with it for a short time.

I'm buying an Asus 7770 and was wondering what CPU would be okish until I have the money to buy a better mobo+CPU.

Please specify wether your PC is Convertible mini Tower, Small form factor or the ultra slim desktop model

Then the maximum processor would be the pentium 4 630, though that motherboard has lga775 due to a certain BIOS limitation.

I'm afraid not. That is the best processor that motherboard will take.

If you are talking about 2011 + games then no it will bareley get 10 fps due to the cpu bottleneck. Games up to 2010 will be fine on low to mid.
There would be quite a large bottleneck on cpu intensive games like assasin's creed, battlefield 2 upwards etc.
