Hi if anyone could help, Im shopping for a cheap am3 cpu for a light mmorpg "aura kingdom". here are the specs of the computer im building:

n68c-gs fx motherboard - Asrock
550w psu
4g of ddr3 1333 ram
500g HD 7200 rpm
gtx 650 ti game card

so I hear athlonII x2 270 or 280 is good. also hear some talk about phenom II x3 having great performance. for this kind of game do I need more than 2 cores? thankyou for any input.

Anything will work for you. You can probably get by with a single core, but the Athlon II were great budget gaming CPU's when they were new.

Minimum CPU is Intel Pentium4 2.8 GHz or better or AMD K8 2600 or better

Reccomended is Intel Core2 Duo 2.66 GHz or equivalent AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 or equivalent

Any Athlon II should work

thank you both for the quick feedback. I've read about unlocking cores. if it does unlock does that stress out the cpu?

Some are unstable on the fourth core and require more voltage, some dont unlock at all, some are actually the phenom x4 that has had parts disabled that are perfectly stable just to make it an athlon x3 and those will be unlocked to phenom perfectly. its luck of the draw. bear in mind if you do unlock the fourth core it may run hotter than the rest
