I recently set up a new system. I'm not sure if the blue screen I'm getting (has happened 3 times) is from my over clock or my OS. I have ASUS 287 pro using the 4 way intelligent software to OC a intel 4770k - it got up to 4.5 and supposedly is stable. however, it has crashed 3 times over the last few days. I haven't seen temp go over 40 C. Using Windows 7 Pro SP 1. Here's the error codes:

A 124 stop code is very likely due to your overclock.

First thing to do is put everything at stock (clocks, voltages, etc.). If the crashes go away then you've got your answer. Overclocking is more a black art than science. Dump the software and learn how to tweak manually.

Thanks EX. I will try it. Disappointing that I can't get the 4.5 with the ASUS software. I have never oc'd before and was looking forward to the "one button" set up. I will reply back if that doesn't fix it.

I ran the software with a lower OC mulitplier and it worked for a time. Then I tried a free test program and system crashed same error. I ran the 4 way optimization again an then It reduced to some kind of 4.4 / hybrid...According to Software it's 4.4 on core 1 and 2 but 4.3 at 3 and 4.
It seems that performance has degraded since initial set up a week ago. Have been playing games mainly. Got a new test going is and CPU temp is steady at 69-71 and motherboard is 28-29. My previous temp listed wasn't during stress test. Test has been going for over an hour now no crash.

Question: is it possible I need to reinstall my CPU cooler? I have a cooler master T4 it is rather tall. I recall actually rocking it (moved) during fan install. If I Moved it could that mean cooler isn't gettng good contact?

What is acceptable CPU temp?

Should I be turning off Hyper Threading?

I am using JAM Software Free test utility called Heavy Load v 3.3

I have been reading that I should be able to get this CPU to 4.5

Just because one person was able to get 4.5GHz out of one CPU does not mean that yours will do the same. Start with everything at STOCK, NO overclock at all. If the system runs stable, then, and only then, can you start to ratchet things up a bit at a time, testing thoroughly at each stage. Dump the brain dead software and learn to do it manually. And to answer your question on Hyperthreading, yes, at extreme overclocks you may well have to disable Hyperthreading.
