I have a working system with computer hard wired to router/cable modem. I also have ROKU wired, and iPhone/iPad connected through WiFi.

All of a sudden, the router ceased to provide connection to the internet. But a direct connection of the cable modem (without going thru the router) to my computer worked. I bought in a new router and the same thing persisted. I pinged the router from my computer, the connection between the router and computer worked. One last trial, I reset my cable modem, everything worked as before.

I just wonder why the setup in a cable modem has made the router not be able to connection to the internet. I hope by understanding this, I can effectively deal with future problem. Thanks

OS: WIndows 7
ISP: Time Warner
Modem: Arris cable modem/VOIP
Router: LInksys E2000

Generally the modem is a pretty stubborn box it gets a mac it likes and will not let it go.

The method you should always follow when changing devices is power off the modem and disconnect the devices. Now you can normally leave the router on but to be really sure you can turn that off too.

Turn on the modem after it appears to have fully booted attach the device you want to use and turn that on if necessary. It should then lock onto the mac address of that device.

If it still refuses to work then try to set your router to clone the mac and key in the mac address of the PC that works on the connection. You should also use the clone method if you plan to switch the router and computer around a lot that way you can avoid powercycle the modem.
