So here's the details. I had an old gateway AM2 mobo with an Athlon X2 4200 running a FreeNAS box just fine. I wanted to upgrade the MoBo to one that supported DDR3 because 8GB of DDR2 was way more expensive and harder to find, and the old MoBo didn't support it.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
So I ordered the above MoBo to put in the system along with a stick of some 8GB Crucial Ballistix sport. While I was at it, I also ordered a little faster Athlon X2 5000 off eBay because why not.
Now all my parts came in and I threw them together. First I plugged in the 5000 to my new MoBo, powered it up, and got NOTHING. No POST beep, no video signal (onboard), nothing at all. Upsetting, but not surprising. I figured the CPU was a DOA eBay purchase. Next I went and grabbed the 4200 which was JUST working in the old Gateway MoBo. Same thing happened (or, didn't happen) with the old CPU. So then I figured I'd try out both CPU's in the old Gateway which I know was working at least with the 4200. Now NEITHER cpu/mobo combo works at all. No post beep, no video signal, nothing. Fans spin up, PSU powers up, but nothing else. I've even tried a different PSU that I know was working on another system and not getting anything. I'm running out of ideas and now I can't even tell what failed first. The new Biostar mobo's specs said that it was backward compatible with Athlon processors, but I did notice that neither CPU fell silky smooth into the socket like they have in other MoBo's in my experience. Is it possible that the new Biostar MoBo killed both of my CPU's? As a last resort I ordered an Athlon II X2 270 Regor, but I don't know if it's even necessary yet. Any and every idea will be greatly appreciated.

nope they simply dont work am2 sockets types are not supported on that motherboard rule 1 always check the manufacturer website
athlon x2 5000 is older then althon II
it only supports am3 and am3 plus
you may have damaged the socket in the board well just have to wait and see i doubt the boards damaged though as the sockets arent that much diffrent well just have to see if the rigor will work now
its listed as working on there bios

Yea...big goof on my part. Now the question that's bugging me even more is why neither of the AM2 CPU's are working on my old AM2 board. Did installing it on the incompatible boards damage/destroy the chips or is there a bigger problem, like a jacked up CPU/RAM/etc.? I know for a fact before moving any parts that the AM2 board and my old 4200 worked just fine before I started screwing with it. Also, if the new Biostar MOBO is damaged, is there any risk of screwing up the Regor when it comes in?

check the pins on the cpu make sure none are bent or missing and if any have been bent you can use a pair of tweezers to gently pry then back straight.
if any pins are missing you wont be able to repair it im pretty confident the motherboard isnt damaged just the cpu pins are bent in cpu as the plastic pieces on the am2 socket are just a few pins diffrence in angle
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/Sock...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d2/MSI_...
top left 11 am2 processor bent
bottom right 9 pin bent
figuired this by looking at the pin connectors on am3 if memory serves correctly am3 plus pin holes are just a bit bigger
hence why am3 and am3 plus works in the bio star
