Im preparing to buy my first new gaming desktop in a lot of years but i have a tough time deciding which socket to choose. I had just selected the 1150 which were almost a habit from the past. I had picked the i7-4770k haswell which which isnt available for the 2011 socket for instance but ive read a pcgamer article that the haswell actually were a poorer choice for desktop gaming at the moment

http://m.pcgamer.com/2013/06/06/might-haswell-upgrade-y...

Is it smarter to pick a different socket and to make a new plan around that or will 1150 be just fine for a long time?

The original plan was this, but i can just pick different components....im not set in stone with anything but the gpu.

Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5 GHz quad.
Corsair Vengeance Bk DDR3-1866 QC - 16GB
OCZ Agility 3 SSD - 120GB
Corsair RM1000 Gold - 1000W PSU
Cooler Master HAF X Black
ASUS GeForce GTX 770 OC - 2GB GDDR5
ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87 (C2) - Haswell

Choose the CPU you want, then the supporting socket/motherboard.

i7 not needed for a gaming PC
I'd steer from an OCZ SSD. That division in in bankruptcy proceedings, and being (probably) bought by Toshiba.

Usafret: thanks for the response. So which i5 would you choose for gaming?

Any socket would be fine, 1150 or 1155. The next gen cpu's are the broadwells which will probably use a new socket anyway, so neither will give you future upgrades. Their is also not much of a difference performance wise between 3rd and 4th gen cpu's, so you are better of with either

If you are not overclocking there is no need for any of the k series cpu's and also a z87 chipset. Also their is no real performance difference between the i5 and the i7 in gaming, so stick with the i5

If you are not overclocking choose the cheapest one, which would be the 4430 because their is no real difference between them besides the clock speeds

Haswells a much better choice...especially if your not overclocking...
I'd just go with a 4670..
