Can I use old hard drive on a new build while still keeping it's data?

Hi,
A couple of weeks ago I asked if I could use an old hard drive on a new build. Apparently, I can. However, I'm not sure if I can use it and still keep my current data (games, programs etc.). I don't mind if I can't, as I can just re-download the essential stuff.

If you're connecting the HDD to a new motherboard, as your primary drive, you're going to want to format and reinstall. You can back up all your data prior to that so you don't lose it.

if the new motherboard has the same chipset you might get away with it......... however, if you have a new HD and want to run that one (used one) to pull data off of, you can do that.
