Win 7 ext USB HD's recognized by disk management but do not show up in Windows Explorer. Flash drives recognized but not multiple ext USB HD's.

Problem is consistent on multiple known good USB 2 and 3 drives that work fine on my Blu-Ray player. HD support was working previously on computer. Sudden start with no noticeable cause.

Problem is consistent on both USB 2 and 3 ports on both back and front of machine.

Windows 7 Professional (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601), ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 MOBO.

Tried uninstalling USB drivers, cold start, USB driver reinstall, with no change or improvement.

Ideas? HD hardware is good. USB support is incomplete. Most likely solution in MOBO softs or Win 7 softs?... or both?

Found the problem. Windows had lost the drive letters for the HD volumes.

Assigned a new drive letter to each ext USB HD and now all HD's are recognized in Win Explorer.

How did you do it? I have two Windows 7 machines that are doing the same thing. The flashdrives show up in Device Manager but with no drive number, how do I get it to assign a drive number or how can I do it?
My husband has some very necessary info on one of the flashdrives he needs for work.
Thanks

You would right-click on the Computer icon, and click on Manage.
Then go into the Disk Management section.
There you will see your drive without a drive letter; Just right-click and select "Assign Drive Letter" and give it a drive letter that you want it to be.

When I go to Disk Management I get "connecting to Virtual Disk Service" and nothing. The flashdrives show up in the device manager, but nothing is listed on the Disk Management tab. I have 2 external hard drives on my computer and several usb flashdrive and flashcard readers, shouldn't they show up on the Disk Management tab? The external hard drives show up under My Computer just fine, although they don't connect all the time, all I have to do is right click on them and the reconnect, but these two flash drives don't show up on My Computer...other flash drives do. I pretty computer savvey but certainly no expert and I much better with previous Windows OS's,
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. I think my husband can get the files he needs from his computer at work, but he lost all the work he did this weekend when this flash drive wouldn't open/show on 3 of our computers. I guess it's the flash drive, but for 2 to do this in one week is odd, I think.
Again thanks.
