I have an older Sony VAIO desktop computer -- PCV RX991 - Model # PCV 7772.
The installed cooling fan is and has been making a somewhat grinding noise that sometimes get very loud and other times is softer. I originally thought it was full of dust and air sprayed it to clean it. That worked somewhat.. still a grinding noise.

Then I isolated the fan from the adjacent ISO cards using rubber washers. That also seem to help.

Unfortunately, the cooling fan can not be completely removed from the desktop computer because of the power cable (?) being connected to something on the top of the computer.

I would like to replace this cooling fan, but the basic problem is the current fan while install using one of the ISO slots is connected via a small red & black wire cable up to the top of the computer where the cable then connects to a white connector that has three other wires coming into it.

In theory, it would seem to me that I could simply cut the red & black wire, remove the cooling fan and replace it with another similar one, and then splice the wires back together.

I would appreciate any ideas of suggestions on 1) where to find the appropriate replacement cooling fan; and 2) how to replace it if some other process is required.

Thank you.

I have considered that and agree that it might be the best solution, but in contacting Sony's Chat line earlier today, they seem to not understand the problem or offer any solutions.

I have to wait until normal business hours before I can call them to discuss the problem. I don't anticipate much help since this is an older unit. I was hoping for some connection to an internet business that would carry these types of parts and is able to offer a solution. Thanks.
