I am wondering which is better to buy? Which is faster? Currently in my system I have 2 8 gig stick of patriot viper 2133 mhz memory on an msi z87 gd65 gaming. One stick is on the slot closest to the cpu and the second is on the 3rd slot. I was originally planning on getting 32 gigs but that is complete over kill and I would just be wasting my money, so should I return the ram and get 4x4 gig sticks? Would that yield better performance?

Solution
It's much easier on the system to run two sticks of RAM rather than four, and will likely have a slight performance bonus, albeit one entirely unnoticeable. Further, you still have the option to add more memory with 2x8 instead of 4x4, making your system more expandable in the future.

I personally have no problems eating up 24Gb of RAM using AfterEffects or Blender - there's never such as thing as too much memory.

Stick with the 2x8GB, less stress on the MC (memory controller)
