Disclaimer: I am very poor right now and hope to solve this without having to replace any parts but as it seems, that may be necessary

So here's the story. I bought GTX 660 about 5-6 months ago to play FFXIV, it installed smoothly and I never had any issues with it at all. Before, I was using a very noisy and outdated ATI Radeon HD 4800.

Fast forward to last week, problems galore and I can't figure out the source. I got into the beta of an MMO which I am not allowed to talk about, but one would assume this MMO couldn't possibly be more taxing on a system than FFXIV was, given its graphics. However, despite this, about 2-3 days into playing this new MMO, my computer just went black, sound cut out, done, no attempt to restart.

I restarted my computer myself and it would go to Windows is Starting, then it would stop, black screen again, no attempt to restart. I then discovered that safe mode was working, but from safe mode after much trial and error, I couldn't solve the problem and decided to try reformatting my harddrie. Windows reinstalled just fine and was working again, but the moment I installed my Nvidia drivers for my GTX 660, windows would stop loading and go to the black screen. Going into safe mode and removing the NVidia drivers reversed the issue,

So naturally, my eyes are now on the GTX 660 as the source of the problem, what could have happened to cause it to act like this? Thanks to google I found multiple possibilities, and went around trying all sorts of solutions. 1. Reformat 2. Install different driver versions 3. Reseat the card 4. Install the drivers without any additions 5. Reset the bios to default inside the bios 6. Reset the bios by removing the battery

Nope to all. Finally, out of frustration, I had assumed that the PCI slot died, so I tested it by inserting my old ATI 4800 into it. Low and behold, drivers installed, my computer worked fine. Excited that I could play again, I logged into the game, and viola, 0 problems, but I wanted to get my GTX 660 to work so I went to live chat with NVidia tech support.

After explaining all this to him, he pointed out the power supply I was using was too low for the card! (420w, a GTX 660 required 450w minimum.) I was confused of why this would cause a problem now and not sooner, but obviously it was a silly oversight by me.

Luckily, my wife had a second computer she had stopped using that for some reason had a 500w, very expensive card and powersupply in it (ATI 5850). I decided it was time to stop playing with my bad card and try the good ol 660 again. I put in the new supply, the 660, and installed the drivers and bam, same issue.

Well shit, right? At least now I had the option of trying the 5850 Radeon instead, it was at least much better and more quiet than the 4800. I put it in and installed drivers, everything was going fine, I opened this new MMO beta to play filled with excitement, filled with joy that I could see it to the fullest while monitoring the 5850 through MSI. But after about 5-10 minutes of playing, bam, computer shuts down.

This time it wouldn't turn back on at all, not to the bios or anything. Reseating the card didn't fix it. Frustrated and after attempting to start it several times, I took out the 5850 and put the 4800 back in, low and behold it booted up fine.

So my question is this, what the hell is going on? What could cause all of these problems? Is it my motherboard? Are the two graphics card still good? Is it the game, and if so why doesn't the GTX 660 work after all of these troubleshooting? Did I accidentally destroy two graphics card with this new MMO? I'm scared to open the game anymore.

I don't know how to change voltage or bios settings, but really, honestly, I can't think of a single thing that could explain all of these issues aside from a shitty motherboard/pci slot, but then why does the loud ass old crappy 4800 work with it fine and dandy? It's fan sounds like a vaccuum cleaner is constantly turned on.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the pcie slot. The 4800 wouldn't work if there was. Try re-installing the 500W PSU in your wife's rig and install the 660 and see if it works there (also try the 5850 to make sure they are both still working or if they are fried)
Contact the Beta MMO's developer and let them know about this issue. They need to hear about this kind of thing (that's one of the reasons you have the beta, to test it for them)
There are other things to try but do these first and don't run the Beta MMO until you get this sorted out and have heard back from the developer.
BTW don't swear on these forums, the forum moderators are pretty strict about that as kids can read these forums (and it's against the rules ;) ) just edit that last line of your post quick!
