I might be looking into Youtube commentaries, and need a decent microphone for it. I'd prefer the microphone to be a desktop mic. But I can't go much higher than 20 dollars. Thanks a lot! -CyanWool

Hello Cyan! Coming from a fellow YouTuber with some somewhat success, I really recommend that you save your money and get a more expensive microphone. $20 just doesn't cut it if you want to make quality videos and have success with your channel. Trust me, I understand how hard it is to make a successful YouTube channel. Even when I made my channel in 2011 it was tough. Now with even more people trying to make it as a successful YouTuber, it is getting harder every single day. One major thing that you need, ESPECIALLY if you are planning on getting into commentaries is a good mic.

So considering you save up just a few more bucks, these are your options (I have experience with all of these microphones):

1. (Super budget) Blue Snowball...

I just purchased the Blue Snowball for the exact same reason. It is a desktop mic, but I recommend going that route because a standard mic is not good enough quality for YouTube. I got it for $30 after shipping costs on eBay, which is about $20-$30 off retail. Probably best to buy it used as it will be cheaper. In terms of quality, it is very good. Crisp audio, perfect for commentating.

If your interested in how it sounds, here's a link to a video where I am using it to record my audio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0i_7qXvlMTE

So considering you save up just a few more bucks, these are your options (I have experience with all of these microphones):

1. (Super budget) Blue Snowball Ice: At only $30, this does provide you the edge you need to stand out as a YouTuber but.. you have to do a LOT of audio editing with Audacity or Adobe Premiere to make this mic sound good. If you really can't afford to fork out the extra $20 for the Blue Snowball (much better), this is your option. This microphone is only cardioid which means that is the only audio setting which is okay.. but I find myself using the other audio settings a lot as well. (Example: -10db pad, omnidirectional)

Buy the mic here: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Snowball-iCE-Microphone/dp/B006DIA77E

2. (Mid Range, Recommenced) Blue Snowball: At $50, this microphone definitely gets the job done as far as audio/vocal quality is concerned. I have used this microphone on my YouTube channel for a long time now and and credit a lot of my success to this. It is very, very easy to use and set up. It comes with a good stand and it's very easy to mount a pop filter onto it (highly recommended). The audio quality is certainly sub par and this is what you need if you are new to and want to be successful on YouTube. It also comes with three different audio settings being cardioid, cardioid with a 10db pad, and omnidirectional. If you don't have a problem buying used, you can probably purchase this microphone for around $30 on YouTube. It also comes in a variety of colors which allows you to match it to your current setup (kinda important to me).

I hope I helped. If you want uber good mic quality, you should get the Blue Yeti but that will take a bite out of your pocket the most at the price of $95. Take care!

What's your YouTube channel name? I'd love to check out some of your vids. I just got into YouTube myself and had my first video tutorial uploaded yesterday.

Thank you so much! This helps me so much in finding a microphone. I might go with the Blue Snowball Ice, unless the Snowball goes on a big sale possible on boxing day. Also, I agree with The CISGuy. It would be awesome to see you're videos!
