So I set up a drive for someone else then ended up using it myself. Now I've got the wrong name still appearing. I changed it under Control Panel > User Accounts and on the start menu, the right name appears. Also from Start > Computer > System Properties. The computer name and full computer name is the right name but when I go to command prompt for example, it still shows up as C:\Users\"wrongname". Why? Why won't it use the name I have listed?

Solution
it is in the regisrty and such as a hard reference.

Create a new user for yourself, copy over what you need from the old profile and go back and remove it.

I've been using the drive for a year or two, the other person never used the drive at all so I took it back (SSD boot drive). So instead of changing one name, you're telling me I have to copy every file and move it? That seems outrageously inefficient.

There's a difference between the underlying name used in the file structure etc. and the visible name. Other OSs tend to make that more obvious by actually giving you an unmodifyable 'short name' and a display name.

It's a reasonably inescapable conclusion of the way users are managed on any modern OS.

You shouldn't have too much to move, though. It's only stuff in your account, like Desktop and My documents. You will also want to move some of the App Data stuff, with your browser history etc.

It doesn't matter enough to do all that. I'm more surprised/displeased that it can't be done simply. Anyway, thanks for the answers.
