Does size matter??

:) I purchased two 1 GB ram sticks at Office Depot to replace the old ram in my moms 2006 dell E310. The new ones are made by Kingston--DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz. The actual width of the sticks is different (smaller) and I didn't feel the 'click' when I installed them. I am always afraid I will hurt something if I force it so I didn't push it with very much force. On startup I received 6 beeps and a black screen. Can the ram stick still work if it is thinner? I am really trying to figure this out but may have to take it to someone....I am not sure if I am explaining this right.

Are you talking about laptop RAM or just low profile? If it's like the SO-DIMM one below, take it back:

If it's just short RAM like below, it should be fine:
