Curious to know if one exists for less than $250, as I don't need high end corporate features like SSL or a hardware VPN, but I do need a backup Internet connection because the one I have is pretty erratic and unstable (Shaw).

I'm a CCNA so don't care if it uses iOS or some proprietary OS instead of a web interface, though web-based management is nice for simple convenience of not having to plug in my laptop into a console port.

The cheapest way to get multiple wan ports is to load dd-wrt. If you have ccna then you know that ethernet ports never go down..or that is not the common failure. I don't think even dd-wrt can detect a outage without a routing protocol which you will never get from a ISP.

If you buy a used cisco commercial router you can the SLA function to select interface based on ping loss or even too much jitter.

Perfect solution with the dd-wrt, thanks! I didn't even know it existed, which makes me sad for my professionalism. It's usually not so much a connection outage as constant losses of DHCP lease where I can't reacquire an IP for ~2 to 20 minutes. dd-wrt seems to support load balancing with failover, which should solve the problem after I get Internet from a second provider.
