1gb is the maximum allowable by the vanilla minecraft server client. If he wishes for more then he should run it via the bukket client. 1gb should be more then enough considering you are using hamachi which implys that you will not have too many people in that server.

To put it into perspective, minecraft recommends 512 mb allocated directlly to the server with an additional 50 mb per player.

I'm not sure what it is that you are asking but I will answer what i'm assuming it is. Bukket is a server client (not related to hamachi which is a virtual network) that runs the minecraft server. It is a bit more modular then the standard minecraft server client and as such is a bit harder to fiddle with. I really do not think that 1gb allocated to the server will be an issue unless you plan on running large scale mods and plenty of them.

Where to download bucket? is port forwarding required?
we need more than one gb of ram because its ftb which has quite a few mods (cant remember the exact number).

http://dl.bukkit.org/downloads/craftbukkit/

It does require your computer and router to be port fowarded and it will allocate RAM is needed.

In a way, yes. A 32 bit OS will only allow for 4gb total system memory to be used regardless of how much is physically installed. That would be an obvious limiting factor in using 8 gb of memory.
