This should be pretty easy but right now I have a Radeon HD 6950, and I was unable to use both DVI inputs alongside the HDMI input. Is this pretty common?

I ended up getting a Mini Display Port to VGA converter, but I will be getting this card around Christmas time and wanted to know if I need to get a display port to (whatever) adapter.

Basically can i use 2 DVI and 1 HDMI with no issues, or should i get to ordering that adapter?

Thanks in advance!

I see you have a VGA monitor.

It requires an Analog input signal.

Which only comes from the card's DVI-I port.

And not the DVI-D port.

So get a DVI-I to VGA adapter and your VGA monitor will run on that.

Running three monitors should not be a problem. The R9 290 is designed to run at lease triple monitors (Eyefinity)

To clarify, all my monitors are VGA and DVI. The problem is that when i used my Radeon HD 6950 I was only to use HDMI and ONE of the DVI ports. This was by their design, as one of the DVI's couldn't run along side the HDMI. Thus i needed to get a mini displayport adapter (VGA just happened to be cheaper)

EDIT: the card had 2 DVI, 1 HDMI, and 2 Mini DisplayPort. The 290 has 2 DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

I wasn't worried about the preformance of using 3 monitors, I would hope it could do that just fine. I just wanted to know if I was able to to use both DVI outputs alongside the HDMI, or if I would have to use the Display Port on the card as well, just like I had to do with the 6950.

It's kind of strange to describe... but I appreciate the reply and your time.

I don't think you'll have a problem using the HDMI and both DVI ports on the 290. But I can't guarantee you anything. Because

1. I don't make graphic cards
2. I don't have a R9 290
3. I am not god

Maybe wait for someone who has done something similar with a 290.

Apparently the new board solves this for us: Source - http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/R9_290X_OC/3.html

-Brief-

Display connectivity options include two DVI ports, one HDMI port, and one DisplayPort. You may use all outputs at the same time, so triple-monitor surround gaming is possible with one card.

Please note that the DVI outputs no longer support analog monitors. AMD also improved their display controller hardware, so you can now use three HDMI/DVI monitors at the same time without having to buy an active DP-to-DVI adapter (this was a requirement to providing the TMDS clock signal for the third monitor on previous generation cards).

So no additional purchase is necessary for me, yay! The more you know...

I had the same problem with the R9 270. Based on my experience and extensive efforts, I feel pretty sure that the DVI-DVI-HDMI configuration is not supported, at least by the R9 270. Maybe the 280/290 are different. A user on the AMD forum claims to have got results with the 280x.

I was finally able to get 3 screens working via DVI, HDMI and Displayport adapter. (I was short on DVI cables.) To get the HDMI monitor to use the full screen, open CCC, My Digital Flat Panels, Scaling Options. Move to 0% overscan. ("Enabling GPU-scaling" looks so right but oh so does not work. How annoying that CCC isn't clearer about this?)

Hope this helps.
