I've built my new rig up to about 90% and am having a couple issues I need to troubleshoot. At first windows 8 enterprise edition wouldn't install on the SSD, hell I couldn't even find the drive in the bios at first and it like only shows up in certain places. I'm trying to get used to this advanced board and the hoard of features. I'm in UEFI (i think) and in both easy and advanced modes i couldn't achieve installation without issues. I was getting the mbr error thingy (can't remember now because I got it to install eventually) but now i'm wondering if it successfully formatted the drive in GPT mode?

Can someone tell me based on these pics if it was successful or if i need to redo my installation and if so how do i do it properly? It's a Samsung 840 Pro 512gb and i'm using an official win8 enterprise cd. I want GPT mode for the advanced features like boot up speeds and redundancy.

By the way, will a regular windows update after bring me to 8.1 or does that have to be purchased separately?

No the disk is formatted for MBR not GPT. On the first picture you posted if the drive was formatted for GPT there would be * just below the GPT line. Windows 8.1 is a free update you can go to the Microsoft Store in the Metro Menu to update to it.

I would not worry about the drive not being in GPT if the drive is working and you have the full amount of space you should be OK. The only thing that would effect the performance of the drive would be whether you selected IDE or AHCI in the BIOS/UEFI. ACHI giving you faster access to a SSD drive. GPT is a newer option and really the main thing it brings is access to larger hard drives and no SSD so far has been large enough to really need it that is 3tb and larger drives that need that.

I suppose you mean whether it was selected Prior to installation and yes it was but MBR is an old format and I'd like to be ahead of the curve with this build. From what I read the redundancy benefits regarding corruption and self-healing and something like 10-15 seconds shaved off of boot times is preferred. Since I haven't installed any drivers yet I'd like to have it set up optimally now instead of redoing it all 3 years from now after its been more adopted.

I did hear something about it not playing nicely with MBR formats and that all drives added in the build would have to be GPT for compatibility later as well but I have no problem setting up futures SSD and mechanical drives this way. It sounds like AHCI is responsible for the SSD access / boot speeds. Not sure how UEFI plays into all this but again, i'd like the redundancy for company work I just need better instructions on how to set it up properly.

Also, if you could take a quick look at the board could you recommend the proper placement of my bluray optical drive and the 840 pro. I have them both in sata 3 ports, the optical in a block that says ASMedia in the manual and the SSD in the block above it. I don't know if this matters.

Got it to work very easily. I saw somewhere online that there are 2 optical drives in boot for some reason and you simply have to select the UEFI one first. (Make sure the drive is in AHCI mode). Then you simple delete all partitions, create a new one from the single unpartitioned drive and it will create 4 parts, install it on 0 - 4. No problems whatsoever. Now i'm just trying to figure out the best boot order because now I see this boot drive thing. What is the ideal order here?
