Rig crashes only during games

So it's fairly simple. I bought a new set about a year ago and right off the bat it was acting funny. It's not a very weak set, so the idea of being able to play the games i want without a problem should sound like a no-brainer.

I have an Intel I5-3470 at 3.2 GHz Processor, 8 GB RAM, an AMD 7800 HD series graphics card, built on a MSI B75MA motherboard. It's supplied by a 550watt PSU.

The problem is, that whenever I play games; no matter what game it is. It can be anything from heroes of newerth to world of warcraft (both of which I could run on my old piece of brick rig without a problem) to something like gta 4 or crysis 2 -- the set just crashes. At first I thought it was a random error or something, faulty game or a bad monitor. So I replaced my monitor, and still the same. It's been going on for a while now so I've started doing stress tests. I ran Prime95 and Furmark to have them nail down on the computer, all it really did was make it more noisy but it didn't crash. It only happens during games. I can watch movies and do 83 other things while I'm at it but god forbid if I want to play a game or two. It's not set in stone either. It can happen 3 minutes after I run a game, or it can not happen during a day at all, it's completely random. I'm putting my money on either a faulty PSU or a software error, is there any way I can diagnose the cause of this and what should be my next steps?

I'm not entirely sure how to test if it's heat or not. During a furtest 1920x1080 test for 15 minutes it achieved 71 degrees tops.

I have a Corsair CX 500W, which is odd because I recall buying a 550 one, hmh.

Unfortunately Sapphire doesn't use part numbers. There are 6 models of Sapphire HD7870 2GB GDDR5

Can't really identify the cause of the problem. If it was a virus problem then it should have affected other software.
Is the PSU very old?
Have u checked all cables are connected properly?
Is there dust?

Mine should be the first of those all.

I've ran my computer through with an antivirus, I've done defrag and I've used stuff like disk cleanup and CCleaner to get rid of any excess stuff there is. The PSU is as old as the computer set itself, I bought it october last year and the cables I've checked are all connected. I make it a habit to clean dust every 3 weeks so I doubt it's that, besides it did the crash as soon as I got the computer, as it was a new set.

I do go to windows updates, is there something I might be missing from it? And Device manager gives me no yellow cautions, I've tried updating all drivers and manually look for mobo, GPU and CPU drivers to see if there are any newer but to no avail.

The only thing I can think of myself is the PSU being too weak but 500 isn't exactly weak. I'm considering doing a full format on the computer at this point though, seeing as it might be a software thing. It's weird because it only happens during games.
