Hello community,

Today, I've changed my net provider. The contract is saying 150mbps, but I have 93~~, here is what they gave me free. The cable passes through Thomson THG571, then connected to TP-link TL-WR740N, 150mbps wireless router.

In the IP address where I access the Thomson in the "Basic Lan" tab in Interface Parameters it says Speed 100Mbps,

So how can I reach my 150mbps, is it because of hardware issue or just that's the capacity of my net provider?

=)

Thanks for the reply.

Is there an option to get my net directly from the Thomson, and use the router only for the WiFi? Now it's Thomson/Tplink/ my lan card. I need the router only for WiFi, nothing else.

Thanks a lot!

Last question, if you don't mind. Can I benefit of the connection for an example 100mbps from the port and let's say the other 50 from the WiFI?

It is a D3 cable modem [with VOIP], but close enough. That's a pretty stupidly designed router to claim 150Mbps then give only 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, but alas the world of sales..

reality wise unless you intend to use a SINGLE connection that can make 150Mbps transfers, multiple things affect this like the hosting server's allotted bandwidth for one [just becasue you can receive at 150Mbps does not mean they can send that fast and its always the slowest device in the circuit that determined the speed] as well as distance and hops you have to go through etc... Anyway, this is realistically I'd see if I could reduce my monthly cost and go down 90-100 Mbps from the ISP.

Since your Thomson THG571 only has 1 ethernet port, you can get a (gigabit) switch.
This way you can connect the wireless router to the switch aswell as your other wired devices and don't get those bottlenecked by the router.

@vsdagama, thanks for the idea, because... I have contract with them for 18 months. I can't change my plan. So I stuck with the 150mbps. I feel a little ashamed for letting myself into that. So I'll try with a switch =0 THANKS!

Switch won't work, unfortunately. The router that makes all your devices appear as one IP needs to be the only thing connected to the modem.

If they told you the router could do 150Mb/s, take it back.

While a gigabit switch won't work, a gigabit router will. You can use the existing router as just a WAP.

Did they supply the router, or was it from a previous connection?

Probably worth getting a new router, but I doubt you'll notice the difference between 100 and 150 for most purposes

You might notice the difference with a WAP that can do more than 150Mb/s, though. That's an absolute maximum that you're not going to get near.

Thanks for the help and the time.

I'm often downloading big amounts of data, almost everyday. And actually the modem is free, I've paid for the router some relevantly small amount of money. But the idea was to use the router only for the WiFi and nothing else. And that's what I've told them, I would like the 150mbps, but I need WiFi too.

I agree that between 100 and 150, isn't a big difference, I'm just a little teased from my lack of information and knowledge.
