Quick question on what power supply cables I need to connect to a new build computer am doing.

Specification for r9 290 at http://www.amd.com/uk/products/desktop/graphics/r9/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-r9-series.aspx#5 vaguely say that both are needed:

1 x 6-pin + 1 x 8-pin

The gpu is mounted on the mobo directly so must be taking out some power from there since the fan for gpu is working.

I tried just the 6 pin cable from my PSU and gave it a start, the downstairs circuit breaker tripped. So am cauious now as to what power supply cables I need to plug in to a gpu which is mounted on the mobo.

Hardware I am using:

1. Mobo: ASRock 990FX Extreme4 (http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/990FX%20Extreme4/)

2. CPU: AMD Sempron 145 Single-Core. (Its listed as compatible on the mobo cpu support list: SDX145HBK13GM)

3. Memory: TeamGroup Elite 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Single Channel Module (TED34GM1333C901)

4. Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. (Attached the monitor and this card with a hdmi cable for display to work. mounted directly on the mobo.)

5. 16GB usb 2.0 drive to boot/install ubuntu.

6. PSU: BeQuiet Dark Power Pro P10 1200W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply (The only connection I have done between the PSU and mobo is the 24 pin connection and the 8pin CPU power supply)

BTW there is no display as of now and I get d6 Dr. debug error code on the mobo, hence trying to sort out the power supply requirements for the gpu.

thx.

Solution
You need to plug both the 8 and the 6 pin connector into the GPU. You should have some extra cables laying around which you got when you purchased your PSU.

I don't know anything about the cables, I'm a general electrician ;) But the first thing I always ask is: Is it the circuit breaker (overload) or the residual-current circuit breaker? (ground fault/earth leak)
Residual-current circuit breakers usually have a manual test push button (with a T on it) whereas circuit breakers don't.

Thanks. Adding both power cables worked.
I do understand cpu and ram are not powerful enough but am trying to build a mining rig with basic cpu/ram.
kind of fun project, hope i don't loose a lot of money in the end ;)

Hi,

if R9 290X 4GB GPU is plugged to one of the pcie slot of the motherboard, does R9 290X 4GB GPU still need the 8 / 6 pin external power cables connected to the R9 290X 4GB GPU? or the motherboard pcie slot will provide enough power to R9 290X 4GB GPU?

Regards,

Yes. R9 290X card will need the 8 and 6 ping external power cables irrespective of if its mounted on the mobo or using riser cables.
