Is something like this even possible? The idea is to plug one monitor in the graphics card, the other one in the built in graphics slot on the motherboard.

Solution
Hello... yes, Windows will need a driver for any hardware you want to use it... https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Graphics&ProductLine=Laptop+graphics+drivers&ProductProduct=4th+Generation+Intel%c2%ae+Core%e2%84%a2+Processors+with+Intel%c2%ae+HD+Graphics+4600 Yes use it!! you will love the extra deskspace, great with alot of webpages and multi screen programs.
You will need to turn it on ( IGT ) in your BIO's if there is a option.
Right click your desktop in Windows for "screen resolution" for display settings and Boot order, etc... for your Windows settings.
Hello... Yes it will work, and some video cards will allow two monitors too... turn on the IGT in your Bios, and have the Driver installed in Windows for it, and use Windows "Screen resolution" to set monitor display settings to each monitor... depends on what you are using, but i3,i5,i7's CPU/GPU/IGT do a wonderful job of multi-monitor usage with a Video card, in a NON-GAMING program.

The reason why Im doing this is because I cant find the right adapter to plug my old philips monitor in the video card (it uses a vga plug).

anyway, the system im running is an i5 4670 @ 3.4ghz and a amd r9 270x

Hello... Yes, VGA is going out of favor with newer video cards, your motherboard should be able to do VGA output with a a simple DVI to VGA adapator... Check your Motherboard manual for VGA pin-outs on the MB connector to be sure... Your Video card will give the best dual monitor performance, but another non-VGA monitor will be needed, as your Video card has only one connector with VGA pin-outs.

Well, both of the monitors Im using are VGA ones. Does that mean I have no chance of running double screen setup or should I be looking to buy a display port in hopes I find one that supports DVI (I have two DVI adapters)

Also, all of this could be forgoten if only I found the correct 2nd DVI adapter. Its kinda the same, but has less pins in it. http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/aplus/detail-page/USB32HDDVII-connector-end.jpg Basically on the left, instead of having + and 4 pin dots around it, it should just have a straight line -. Quite hard to explain tho.

edit - found an image. http://codinghorror.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a85dcdae970b0120a86d715a970b-pi
if you look at both images, you can see the difference.
any idea where i could find an vga/dvi adapter like that?

Hello... Display port is a different type of connector, was created as a no Royalty/low cost option vs HDMI and is not analog VGA... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort The four pins on the right are the VGA/analog pin-outs on a DVI connector... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface
like i said look in your MB manual for Analog VGA pin-outs, and get a Passive adaptor for DVI to VGA analog only, you cannot get a passive adaptor for HDMI or Display port connectors.

Hello... what is your MB model/brand? like I said look in your MB manual for Analog VGA pin-outs, and get a Passive adaptor for DVI to VGA analog only, you cannot get a passive adaptor for HDMI or Display port connectors.
Your other connection options with your VIdeo card are Display port, HDMI, and DVI-D, the VGA/DVI connector (in your first pic) is a DVI-I.
All the other connections are DIGTAL video only pin-outs, and are common to all current monitors avalable to Buy.

Do I have to install additional intel graphics drivers to run the second monitor on my motherboard?
The second monitor will be used to view skype, chrome etc, while the main monitor will be used for games.
