What is your CPU,RAM,PSU,monitor resolution? The r9 270x toxic is the best and for the r9 280x also the toxic model and the r9 280x has a better price performance ratio and you could directly go for it.

My cpu is the 4670k, ram is 8gb and res is 1920 x 1080, so you suggest 280x toxic because it has better price to perform ratio than the 270x? thanks for the reply

Yes it has and if you are willing to pay the extra money it would be a better choice and your system is good and the GPU would last longer. What is your PSU?

An R9-270X is about $220 and the 280X is about $420. Value hardly factors into it, they're completely different price skews.

Also, most cards are sold out.

How is the R9-280X the better VALUE according to this graph?
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-280x-r9-2...

The R9-270X is getting 77% of the performance for 52% of the price (though I didn't factor in the cost of BF4 for the 280X).

Atm the US prices are high because of demand and should get stable again.

Wow, I just checked out prices from pcpartpickeruk instead:

It's about 68% of the price for a 270X versus a comparable 280X. It's 52% in North America currently (bitcoin miners?).

As for VALUE, that's hard to say as the 270X gets roughly 75% of the performance of the 280X. The 280X also has 3GB of VRAM (some would argue not important) and may last you longer before your next upgrade, plus it's going to give better performance.

So if money is tight the 270X is a great card but I do recommend the 280X (if these are the only two choices) once pricing is back to normal (if it's not where you live).

Thanks for the reply and yes I am from the UK and I am trying to stick with R9 cards since I heard about amd introducing mantle which is said to help a lot b but who knows anyway money is sort of on a budget I just hope prices go down for Christmas time if not I will have to go with 270x. One more thing, I had read people say that you should go for a 7970 over a 280x as the 280x is just a rebranded 7970 and you get the 3 free games. Is this true? or 280x more future proof because it's newer?

The r9 280x is a HD 7970 GHz edition with a bit newer technology but the reference cards have the same performance. With the r9 280x you get 1 game I think and with the HD 7970 GHz edition you get 3 and so it depends what you want.

I'd say MSI's R9 270X Gaming Edition cards. Why?
1. It comes factory overclocked
2. Has a higher boost clock, especially in OC mode (1120 MHz)
3. Really nice cooling design (rotates backwards on startup to get rid of dust, then runs back around for normal cooling)
4. Option of 2 GB or 4 GB, one of the few manufacturers to have that option

Some issues:
1. The 280X version has a known coil whine because of the power draw from the PCIe cables, and due to its similar design, it MIGHT happen with the 270X, but I'd highly doubt it.
