Hey guys, I've begun my first ever PC build and am having some problems with an external POST. My rig is as follows:
i5-3350p (no integrated graphics)
2 x 4GB Patriot Black Mamba
Sapphire Radeon 7870 2GB
ASRock H77M
Corsair CX600M PSU

I wired a speaker onto the board and get 5 beeps on POST. According to ASRock this indicates a CPU or GPU problem. I've confirmed the GPU works fine in a friend's PC. I've also used his PSU to check that isn't the problem. If I run POST with just the processor I get 3 beeps, indicating no RAM as expected. With the RAM installed I get 5. With the GPU installed I still get 5.

I suspected the mobo might be the problem, and after requesting a replacement from Amazon am still getting the same problem. This leaves the CPU and RAM, which seems odd as they POST as expected.

Obviously I've checked all board connections etc, the only problem might be the PSU 24-pin doesn't sit well in the ATX slot unless I really force it in. Seems odd as my buddy has the same PSU and it runs his Z77 Extreme4 fine even with the same problem.

TL;DR: I've verified the RAM, the mobo, GPU, and PSU. It doesn't appear to be a CPU error as the system posts. My gut feeling is that this is a bios issue, for some reason the mobo doesn't like the 3350p not having integrated graphics so throws a no gpu error. But this also seems unlikely...

Could someone please shed some light on this, I'm losing it here! Thanks.

Well according to AsRock your CPU is supported with that motherboard so that should not be a problem. Having no igpu just means that you must use a GPU but the CPU will still work with that board. Have you checked to make sure the CPU is inserted correctly and there are no bent pins on the motherboard CPU socket? From the beep code and the fact you have checked the GPU on another rig my best guess would be bad CPU. Plus the fact you have already replaced the motherboard and are getting the same results leads me to a bad CPU. I would RMA it and get a replacement.

I've reseated the CPU with no success. Can't see any bent pins either and was very careful when installing it.

I'll look at sending the CPU back to ebuyer and seeing if they can find any fault with it. It just seems odd that POST with just the processor installed gives a no-RAM beep code error, and with RAM inserted gives a no-GPU error. I haven't had a single CPU beep code error, although this is the only part that could be at fault if it is indeed hardware-related.

Is it at all possible that its a BIOS issue with the mobo not detecting the GPU correctly?

Thanks!

I've RMA'd the CPU and it was found to be working fine. At this point I've tested nearly all hardware in a friend's machine and RMA'd everything else.

This leaves only 1 solution in my limited knowledge of PCs - the mobo needs a BIOS update to recognise the GPU, which can only be achieved with an integrated-GPU processor or a manufacturer BIOS flash.
