I7 or I5 for Gaming?

I am getting a new computer soon, and I would like to know if an I7 is worth it for gaming, or I should just get an I5. I will be playing and recording minecraft with mods, as well as battlefield 3

I am just gonna chime in here and say that an i7's hyper-threading does add a major performance boost to gaming. The reason you didn't see the difference before is that games only used 4 threads. Now they use 8 and Crysis 3, BF4, and even Metro: LL utilize the extra performance. Next year is when we will finally see the the i7's pull ahead of the i5's with an ever increasing margin.

P.S. If you do get an i5, get the i5-3570K. If you get an i7, get the i7-4770K.

Get an i5 4670k, really good CPU, more than enough for gaming, and there isn't a big difference between i5 and i7 in gaming

This brings up a good question OP, are you planning on overclocking? If not, a K Series is a waste of money.

I5 is more than adequate. get the 3750K (I think any that end in K are unlocked) and overclock if needed. You can get nearly the same performance out of an i5 as an i7 with some tweaking. I have the 3750k running stock and run games like bioshock infinite at 1440p @80+ fps ave. Haven't had the need to OC the cpu above stock speeds yet.

edit: 4670k is what i have.

OP, please note that micecraft is a strange beast. it runs on java so your FPS is going to be bound by your CPU power, not your video card . I built my nephew a PC using the 4670k and gets 150+ fps but he OC'ed to 4.2 just using the multiplier. think he was getting closer to 100 fps before OC.

I think you're greatly overestimating the CPU's role. I don't see more than four coures/ threads coming into "the big leagues" for years.

I'm in the same boat, however I BOUGHT my i5 4670k. Its great, but I'm already starting to think that an i7 might be better. Will the hyper threading really make a difference? Technically, the i7 and i5 are both 4 core CPUs, only the i7 is hyper threaded meaning each core has extra firepower. With that logic, will we see THAT much of an increase? And all that being said, would it be good and a solid "future proofing" route to sell my i5 4670k (or put it into a different rig) and buy the i7 4770k?

Well, I agree with that more or less, but bf4 benchmarks are showing that more cores are showing Better performance. And as new games come out and get their ports to PC (hopefully better optimized lol) they will by default be more or less rigged for an 8 core system. Now, that's not saying the console cores are equal to PC cores, but there is something to be said when the tests show the 8 core AMD CPUs finally pulling ahead in multithreaded apps like bf4, ac4, and other things optimized for amd or many threads. I know I'm asking alot of questions, but I want t spend my money the best way possible but not have to upgrade CPU, mobo ram, etc for a decent amount of tine
