I'm looking to set up a small Minecraft multiplayer server for, at most, 3-4 players. I don't want to buy an overkill machine for this, and I'm on a budget, so I did a search and found this Dell PowerEdge 1850: (direct link)

  • ■Installed component — Max capability
    ■Single Xeon 2.8 GHz CPU — Dual-CPU capable
    ■1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, 400 MHz — 16 GB
    ■73 GB HDD, SCSI Ultra300 — 600 GB
■No OS installed — Windows 2000 (LOL) certified, meets Ubuntu Server requirements
    ■CD-ROM optical drive, 24x speed
    ■550 watt PSU
    ■16 MB video memory
My question is this: can this machine run a small 3-4 player vanilla Minecraft server? I know the thing is old, but I'm not looking for a thousand-player megaserver.

Also, if this is the wrong forum, please direct me to the correct one for future reference.

The computer cools great to run a 3-4 player Minecraft server! I had a 2 player server and i only had 512MB of ram! but the person was about a block away. The only problem your are going to have is your internet speed. You mined want to go see your internet speed so go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and get your internet speed and then go to http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/ and fill in the 3 easy questions and it will give you a estimated amount of people you can have. You will probably never use the 73GB of hard drive,a Minecraft vanilla server is not that much. One more thing is do not put a big OS on the computer it will just slow it down.Great luck with it!

It depends on how much dedicated video ram you have. 16MB is not enough. It requires at least 32MB, but you can adjust your video ram in the BIOS settings. You can access your BIOS settings when you turn on your computer. Go into setup> BIOS setup> System Configuration> RAM> Video RAM> there you can change it to the highest video RAM it can take. :D

For a Minecraft server you do not need lots of video ram! You only need a good video card if you are playing the game on it. I do not agree with the person above because the person asked "Can this computer run a Minecraft Server" not play the game.
