Hello,

I use VM Workstation 10, i run Windows7 VMs and each VM plays a 3D game. I want to build a "desktop computer" that exclusively runs VMs and runs as many VMs as possible, what is the best cost-effective setup? should i use i7 or XEON? dual socket? what OS to boost performance? is there a software cap for the number of VMs i can use?...

This computer will run 24/7 and it has to be stable. Each VM needs 1 GB RAM and 3-4 GB of disk space.

The computer im running atm can handle stable 30 VMs and unstable 36 VMs:

i7-4930k

64GB RAM

SabertoothX79

128+256GB SSD (one with Windows7 OS and the other for the VMs)

GTX 660 3GB

Any advice is welcome (even basic/obvious stuff).

Thanks a lot.

What you guys think about this?:

Asus Z9PE-D8WS

2 x (Intel Xeon E5-2630 2.30Ghz or Intel Xeon E5-2620 2.0Ghz)

80gbram

Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 With Boost 3GB GDDR5

This should handle 60+ VMs.

I need advice with the xeons, there is a big difference in price between the 2 but im not sure if the difference would matter for my purposes. 8 cores xeon brings more VMs but is not cost-effective. Im also not sure if 1 GPU is enough or i would need 2.
