Hey all,

I got into PC gaming about two years ago, I did not build the system and had a friend do it. I am going to attempt to upgrade my rig with a new 2 TB Westernd Digital 7200 RPM black HDD, and a Samsung EVO Pro 256 GB SSD. I will be swapping out an extremely old 500 GB American Megatrends HDD that was actually leftover from the last PC I purchased at Best Buy about 8 years ago!

So anyways, I have a little experience building, but a total novice. Since I got into this hobby, I swapped out a CPU and a GPU. However, that seemed pretty easy compared to this. I've watched a ton of online tutorials, and read up a lot, so I am sorta confident I can pull this off. But wanted to ask the community a few specifics, as well as an open invititation for any tips.

I want to set up the SSD as the boot drive and for games, with the HDD for storage. What is the best way to do this in the BIOS? I've watched some tutorials, but not sure which "mode" to put it in. It's not RAID, correct? I want the HDD to be just another drive in Windows explorer.

Also, I've heard it's a good idea to make a mirror image of the fresh install of Windows if anything goes wrong in the future. Is this a good idea? And what is the best way to do this?

I have the data cables, but the power ones for the second drive I'm just kinda hoping is in the case when I open it up. I have a modular power supply, but the guy who built it for me didn't leave any cables behind with the rest of the various nuts/bolts he handed me when the thing was done. I do have a 2.5" drive converter through for the SSD. What are the chances I end up having to go get another power cable?

Also, I am pretty sure this last thing is awfully straightforward, but all my games I play are on steam, so re-installing them won't be TOO big of a pain in the butt, but I don't want to lose my saves. It is possible to just grab those off the old HDD before installing the new drive, and copying them to the new drive? Right?

Okay, this is getting pretty long, I'll stop here. Any help/tips/advice would be great!

Thanks! Regarding the cables, I am pretty sure he didn't give them to me. Are these things universal, or am I going to have to potentially go back to the specific manufacturer?

Not sure, but I wouldn't count on them being universal.
