Ok so i have a gtx780 and a ASUS pn5-d mobo. a q9400 quad core processor. The mobo has a alc 883 sound chip with a spdif out. from what i read I cant play games in surround with this set up. Will it affect performance running an hdmi from my video card and will the games be in surround? it would be through an hdmi. That option requires me to get a new reciever that has hdmi inputs. My other option is buying a sound card with the spdif output and my question there is which one will play everything in true surround sound in games via that crazy connection

Thats kinda funny. Thats actually the sound card i was looking at. So if i buy this then my games will play in surround via the spdif cable? And i have vista. Will that be an issue? I took out my old sound blaster because of the vista compatability issues.

i don't think so, never heard of that problem w/ vista, its normally know as "harddrive eater". And most mobo, include whatthis card has. but since you're using vista i'm assuming it's fairlly old, so this card should work. The normal use for card, is the fact that it takes the strain of the sound off the cpu, freeing sme performance.

I'm assuming so, because this card supports 7.1, which should support 5.1
