I will be getting the MSI R9 280x (Twin frozr gaming) GPU, and from what I can see, inside the box it comes with a 6pin to 8pin cable, and some 6pin cable.

This GPU needs a 8pin connector and a 6pin

My current GPU is a HD 7770 which requires 1 6pin connector, so I know that I have that, however I am confused about how to hook up this R9 280x. How does this 6pin to 8pin cable work, it seems to have a 6pin on one end and a 8pin on the other, and no where to plug it in... Do I connect the 6pin to another 6pin and then connect the 8pin into the gpu or what? Any help appreciated..

What Power Supply do you currently have?

I know I'm going to get yelled at, but its 'unbranded'. I will be upgrading it shortly, in like a couple / few weeks >_< My PC was budget and im upgrading parts slowly. My PSU is next..

Its 750w

It's ok, you gotta get what you can afford :)

If it's a 750W, it should have come with at least 2 6-Pin PCIe power adapters (more than likely 2 of the 6+2 PCIe adapters)

If the latter is the case, you can just use the cables straight from your PSU to the GPU.

If not, use the 6-pin that is currently there, and use the adapter for the 8pin port (PSU cable > Adapter > GPU)

Here is a picture of the 6+2 pin PCIe cable that I was talking about.

Could you link me to a cable like such? Really do not have a clue about cables.

The 6pin i am currently using for my 7770 does not have that extra 2 pin thing on the side daniel, does that mean mine are not like that? I am also unaware if I have a second one as I have no clue what I'm looking for, i'm no good with this cabling stuff :/

This is the cable the other poster was mentioning.

NO, just because you don't have the 6+2 pin cables on your PSU doesn't mean it won't work.

You should have 2 6Pin cables coming off of your PSU. A lot of times the cables will be similar to this http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/09/akasa... which has 2 ends to the same cable.

Easiest thing to do would be to open your PC, and look for a second 6 pin adapter.

I opened up the case, and could not really see a second pin adapter.. I have a couple of spare adapters inside which are rectangle shaped and have 4 pins, which I do not know what they do... but with the 6pin that come with the card it has white transparent 4pin connector things on the end, maybe they connect together.. to form the second 6pin?

I found out with that 6 pin to 8pin, I can connect a 6 pin to the 6pin slot then the 8pin will go into the card.

Yeah, that sounds right.

Ok, I understand the 8pin now and how it will combine the 2 6 pins into a 8pin, but im lost on where I plug in these white transparent things which have 4 pins in for the 6pin that come with the card >_<

Can you take a picture of it so I can see what you are talking about?

Here is a picture from google, it comes with this but I do not know how to plug this in? http://www.systemagnostic.com/wp-uploads/2013/01/molex_...

If I can plug this in then I can just connect that 6pin to the 6pin slot, and the second 6pin into the 8pin and then plug the 8pin into the card and done :p

Yes, you can plug that into the 6-pin slot, and use the 6-pin to 8-pin adapter for the second slot.

That adapter plugs into the "4-pin molex" plugs that are in your computer. They are most commonly used for Hard Drives, you should have plenty attached to your PSU

Oh okay, great, I found one which is a rectangle shape, and has 4 pins on the end, it is black, I am guessing I plug that in there? Once I connect that and plug the 6pin into the GPU, then use the other 6pin for the 8pin and connect that 8pin in, it should run as it should with the correct power?

Also because the PSU is unbranded, what does this mean towards the power consumption that I need for the gpu? Will it still be fine on the psu?

Yep, that is exactly how to hook it up :)

750W is plenty, but it would still be a good idea to upgrade before too long, just because they can be unreliable.

Well thank you very much for you help, as that 6pin that I showed a picture of comes with 2 4 pin connectors, do I only plug in one of them? An the other is a spare?

No, you are going to want to plug both in since the current draw is more than a single one is designed to supply.

Damn, I think only one is spare, one other one is plugged into my front case fans by the looks of things
