Is it possible to crossfire two R9 GPU's?

ideally you need at least the same range so for example you could crossfire a 7950 and 7970 (280 and 280x) or 7850 and 7870 (270 and 270x).
i think it works with any combination but the better gpu is downclocked to the lower one and combined with the crossfire penalty on performance it ends up not being worth it.
edit: when you crossfire 2 identical cards you get about 50-75% scalability, when you combine one that has 75% of the performance you get... 50-75% from (75% x 2) so you use 2 cards to get the same end results as the more powerful card.
