Solid system suddenly hit by low FPS

Hi people. I just got help earlier to locate good upgrades, but meanwhile I have an annoying problem on my hands. If this is the wrong place for this question, please forgive me.

My rig is this:

GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2 AM3+ AMD 760G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Quad-Core
4GB Kingston ValueRAM. 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM. 1333 MHz.
XFX Core Edition FX-787A-CNFC Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-bit G DDR5 PCI Express 3.
550 Watt XFX Core Edition PRO550W

The problem is this: Where I originally got between 40-80 in for example Metro: Last Light, now I get ca. 20. No matter how I configure the game. To be exact: In opens up in ca. 80 FPS, then drops to 20 when I move into the open. It's so strange. My rig has been going steady, so what could be the reason for this?

Any help would be appreciated :)

Could be a heat issue. Check that all the case fans are working properly and check the GPU and CPU coolers for dust clogging it up.
Since CPU's and GPU's generally have protective mechanisms to slow the clockspeeds in case of excessive heat.

Other than that could, be extra SW you have installed on your machine since then which is now taking up CPU juice for example.

Hi and thanks :) Well, my CPU is below 62 Celsius (doing gaming), so surely that could not be doing the damage? I did move the machine from a cold room to a warm room, but seriously - could that do the damage? Even though it's below the AMD CPU limit?

Update: The problem is way strange. When moving from full HD to for example 1080x768 (or something like it), there is no FPS-change. Whatsoever.

It could also be driver errors as well. Check your Radeon Drivers. I have a 7870 GHZ edition too with a FX 6300. Similar thing happened to me a while back. Went into the catalyst control center, that locked up the computer, had to rip off all traces and install drivers from AMD's site, not the drivers from the card manufacturer (ie. XFX, Saphire etc). Try that. It worked well for me also it sped up my windows load up times too. Radeon Drivers always bound to get corrupted at least once. The money for the performance however is what makes it worth it.
