My current specs are:

-4 GB DDr2 Memory
-7200 rpm HDD 750 GB SATA
-AMD Sapphire Radeon HD 6450 1 GB DDr3
-Core 2 Duo e6600 2.4 GHz
-Proprietary 280 watt PSU (I have a dell Optiplex 745 Desktop)
I have not had a single power issue with this current computer.
I was wondering what the maximum capacity of this PSU is. I just got the Core 2 Duo, which replaced a Pentium D 945 3.4 GHz, which took thirty more watts.
I was thinking about upgrading the GPU to an AMD Sapphire 7750 1 GB GDDr5 Low profile. I would like to know if this upgrade would be possible with this current PSU.
That was not the main point of this thread. The main point of me making this thread is to know if I could install a Core 2 Quad q6600 2.4 GHz as well.
I looked this up and the core 2 quad takes 105 watts, and the 7750 consumes 50 watts. Added together, this is 155 watts. What would be left in this case would be 125 watts. Would that be enough for what is left? (Meaning the HDD, the mobo, the ram, and other things like that, everything but the GPU and CPU.) Thank you in advance.

You should be ok in the 280w envelope, but cutting it close with all components included.

Something to consider is the investment for the C2Q & 7850 vs starting the foundation of a rebuild.

No way to tell how long it will last. You do run the rick of a failing power supply frying everything but most of the time they just die.

Yes the MB will fit into another case.

I use an Ultra Small 745 C2D as a bedroom HTPC. What form factor 745 do you have? There isn't any reason you couldn't reuse the case.

Food for thought. You can get an A8-6600k + MB & 4GB DDR3 for $150 at MicroCenter. The A8-6600k is well faster than the q6600, has a built GPU that's faster than your current card, and all this draws less than your current setup. Therefore you could reuse about everything else you currently have and not spend more than a PS and the 7750.

But it cannot use an amd processor. Damn it dell. That sounds like a deal and a half, but I cannot do it. Blackbird, I knew it would do the card, but I was also unsure about the core 2 quad. If I could get both, my computer would be better than all of my friends computers.

I am still wondering if I can get away with using 125 watts for everything else. That was my main reason for doing this. I know I can at least do one or the other, but it would be amazing if I could do both. Also, does keeping a PSU close to capacity make it more likely to fail?
