Good plan dude, you won't be disappointed with the 770 or the 760 :)

Glad I could help!

As long as he isn't running it at full load, I think 500 should do the trick, it will be a stretch though, upgrading the PSU is the least of his problems though, you can get a 600w for under $50.

The Corsair CX500M contains two 6+2 PCIe power cables.
A GTX770 requires one 6pin and one 8pin.

A GTX770 will run fine on a 500W, depending on the rest of your system, but somewhere in the 550-600W is probably more of a common recommend as it gives you a bit more headroom.

And its paired with a fx 6300 and some gskill 8gb of ram

the CX500M does NOT NOT NOT have two 8-pin cables. it has ONE cable with TWO connectors, each being a 6+2. this means that for two lower-power cards it's perfectly fine, but for a high-power card it's not ideal.

case in point - the CX500M i bought was an open box cuz the guy who bought it before me didn't know this detail and to him it was important. i could tell since everything was 100% intact except the PCIe power cable - it was the only one he looked at and came to this same conclusion: perfectly fine for 2 light/medium cards, not good enough for one power-hungry card.

8-pin PCI power is the exact same thing as 6+2 pin PCI power. just that some cards only need 6, other cards need 8 so the +2 clips onto the 6-pin block to make an 8-pin block. 6+2=8.

but the little adapter that comes with some graphics cards is typically an 8-pin PCI power to two 4-pin Molex. but the idea is that you'd connect it to two separate molex power cables going back to the power supply.

if you're using mid-grade cards, it's probably not worth worrying about. but if you're using a $300-plus card that pulls 200W-plus of power, i'd do whatever possible to have separate power lines all the way back to the power supply.

what you CAN do is use the CX500M but use the included PCIe power for one of the 8-pin connectors on the card, and use the 8pin-to-molex on a dedicated molex line (on which you don't have any hard drives). then you should be fine - two separate lines back to PSU.

Can you recommend a 600w psu? Ive really never looked beyond the 500w from Corsair

on a tight budget, I'd recommend the corsair cx600m. I've personally used it on builds before with no problems.

hmm, a GTX770 is a 230W card, which means 20A on the 12V line. another 7-10A or so for a CPU, and that's basically 30A. no overclocking, though. the 38A capacity might be alright, but yeah if you intend to run more gear and/or overclock, that 8A headroom is gonna disappear pretty quickly.

i have an old Antec TruePower Trio TP3-650 and it's rated for 19A on each of the three 12V lines, total 52A on all 12V lines combined. that PSU cost me around $100 a few years ago. something like it would be ideal for your needs.

Having multiple connectors on the same cable is pretty common as it cuts down on the number of cables required and helps keep your system tidy, I really wouldn't see that as a massive concern. The CX500M is a budget PSU and so for the price its not half bad. If you are splashing out on something like a GTX770 then you definitely can afford to spend a little more though.

It depends where you are in the world, but good modular PSUs of that kind of capacity -
Antec HCG-620M, Seasonic M12II 620,SSR-650RM, Rosewill Capstone 650M, XFX XXX650
And if you really want a Corsair - Corsair CX600M, TX650M, RM650
