Pretty much all Linux distributions are the same as far as compatibility. Differences tend to be in usability. I'd recommend something like Ubuntu since it seems to be very user friendly. I'd also suggest using a Live CD/DVD/USB so you can play around with it and decide if you like it without wiping out Windows.

Just as a warning, though. You may have a bit of trouble with wireless Internet, if the wireless card in your laptop is Broadcom-based. I have a Broadcom-based card in my Dell Latitude laptop running OpenSUSE, and the stupid thing requires separately-provided drivers every time the Linux kernel gets updated. Atheros-based cards work great in Linux, though.
