Should I be able to watch HD video over the network?

I have a PC with some mkvs on them it's connected directly to an Asus RT-AC66U router. I connect to the PC from my Macbook Air and try to watch the video. It works generally, but now and then the video pauses for 5-15 seconds.
the video bitrate is generally 2,000-3,000 kbps but occasionally up to 8kbps
Is it reasonable to expect this to play over a network connection Mac to PC? What can I do to make it possible?
I know I could copy the files over to the macbook, but I'd definitely rather not worry about that

Pretty major oversight... The torrents will kill the bandwidth!
Regardless though, your router's throughput will dictate the overall network speed. But I don't think that your ASUS should have any problem copping in that area.

Macbook Air (2013 version) is connected wirelessly and it apparently has 802.11ac technology.
My desktop is connected via wires... the Local Area Connection Status lists the speed as 1.0 Gbps

I feel like that should be enough no problem.. esp given my router is apparently amazing.
