Hello.

I just bought a 840 EvO 250 gb. This is my first ssd.

My system is:

ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AMD890 chipset + AMD Phenom II X4 955 + 16 GB Kingston HyperX

The motherboard has six SATA 3.0 ports, divided in two different storage controllers: The AMD and a JMicron. I don't know exactly which port belongs to each controller. That information is not available in the board installation manual.

I set all ports do AHCI, installed Win7 x64, and, without installing motherboard's drivers I ran Samsung Magician, the outcome was:

Sata 6 Gbs --> Yes
AHCI Mode --> Yes

I did the performance optimization, set the over provissioning (10% of the drive) and The benchamark was:

Sequential Read/Write 407/431
Ramdom Read/Write 46101/65537

I went on and installed the motherboard drivers. I noticed that both Jmicron and AMD AHCI Drivers installed succesfully, and ran Magician again.

New result:

Sata 6 Gbs --> N/A
AHCI Mode --> Deactivated

The new benchamark was:

Sequential Read/Write 525/506 (a lot better)
Ramdom Read/Write 66735/65550 (Better too, but I think is not enough for this SSD)

Questions:

1 - Is this result good enough?
2 - Why Did magician failed detecting AHCI and Sata 3 after driving installation?
3 - Is magician info reliable? Should I use other software?
4 - What should I do to improve all this.

And where is RAPID? Isn't supposed to be inside magician?

All suggestions and advices are welcome.

Thank you.

on page XI near the beginning of the manual, in the storage section you'll see that the JMicron controller is only for the IDE port and the eSata port so that means you are connected to the AMD chipset controller (the SB850).
It also tells you this again in section 2.2.2 Layout.(see item 11) and then again in Chapter 2 section 2 (pg 2-31)

Now I'm not trying to belittle you, rather hoping you will look...

I upated the AMD chipset set of drivers and Magician started showing both the AHCI and the sata 3, but now the performance has gone down: IOPS R/W 43422/37332 so I uninstalled the updated package of drivers and went back to the first one, again the same problem with detection, but I don't matter anymore, I activated RAPID and benchamark is: Seq R/W 996/1048 IOPS R/W 85331/75305. I'm Happy with this.

Popatim You're right, the Jmicron is only for IDE and eSata, it shows in the manual, I missed it. My manual is in bad condition, It giot wet the day that my 75 galon fish tank got a crack and turned my studio room into a swimming pool he he he. I will study the IRQ assignments as adviced and if nothing else come up I will let it be.

Thank you very much.
